David Wren, who is currently writing a book with photographs by Tom Crane about the history of Ardrossan, is quoted in an article magazine "Quest": "It's like you're ascending to Shargri La (the approach to the main house). Colonel Montgomery hired the well-known architect, Horace Trumbaur (who designed many of the famous estate homes and buildings in the area including the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The estate takes its name from the Montgomery ancestral family home in Scotland." Wren noted that the Georgian style house is positined perfectly for the grounds. "When you're looking at it from below (as in the painting below), it looks far more magificent than if you were looking at it at ground level." The Quest article continues, "Everything about the Ardrossan is grand; most Main Line houses were built with twelve-foot ceilings – Ardrossan's are 13."

Originally the estate included 800 acres. More than half of that have been sold.
